Artist Website

Charles Seerey’s work explores a personal artistic interaction with historical and contemporary images as a way of creating a distinctive pictorial reality.  The paintings consist of a predetermined vocabulary of signs and elements, from the overlooked, forgotten and the common, to create a unified thematic core for the artwork.

Artists Statement:

I consider the making of art a system of visual research that requires careful inquiries into a subject matter.  This system uses a combination of periods of research and contemplation on the one hand and intense periods of activity on the other.  The aim is to explore the interaction of historical and contemporary images and a way of creating a distinctive pictorial reality that can be shared with others.  The paintings that I am currently making consist of a predetermined vocabulary of signs and elements, from the overlooked, forgotten and the common, to create a unified thematic core for the artwork.  Using a contemplative process — appropriating, revising and transposing—I create multi-layered images in which ensuing layers partially conceal yet integrate with preceding layers. I aspire to make artwork that exhibits a quality of balanced intensity with carefully detailed statements of color, space and thematic complexity.

Charles Seerey has lived and worked in Sacramento, California for over 20 years. He is originally from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma but has lived in New York, Texas and New Mexico before moving to Northern California.
