Axis Gallery is proud to announce Alter/Altar, a new solo exhibition by Jamie Angello. Alter/Altar remixes existing imagery to create artifacts that are, at once, familiar and new. Building upon the appropriationist tradition, Angello treats ancient and revered works of art as shared text to be examined and edited from a contemporary perspective. You do not need to be familiar with the individual works from which Angello draws his inspiration in order to engage with the questions they raise. What is an “original” work of art? What, if anything, does appropriation say about the ownership of ideas? And, why do certain ideas and images persist throughout human history?
Angello was born in a blizzard in Colorado and raised on the cliffs of northern California. Along a stretch of beach, famous for its polished glass, and once known as the city dump, he discovered his love for found objects and the examination of the culture they signify. He received his BA from CSU Sacramento in 2013 and his MFA from UC Davis in 2015.
