“Fields of Black” is Phil Amrhein’s 5th solo exhibition at Axis Gallery. This body of work continues his exploration of non objective black paintings and his alliance to the minimalist credo. The black paint is sprayed and sanded on two very different surfaces – mylar and canvas. “I intentionally spray the paint in a crude and unrefined manner which I find very attractive. The sanding enhances and evens the surface texture – a process that is experimental and unpredictable.” These paintings create an aesthetic unique to Amrhein and show his attraction to the visual heft and stark beauty of black.
About the Artist: Phil Amrhein is a graduate of UC Davis with an MA in studio art from CSU Sacramento. Phil is a practicing artist living in Sacramento CA.
