Axis Gallery is pleased to present a selection of art collector Thomas Dewitt’s extraordinary art collection during the month of July in the main gallery. Mr. Dewitt is a Northern California resident and has been collecting art for about 15 years nationally and internationally. Works from his collection have been featured in galleries such as Sandra Lee Gallery in San Francisco in 2014 and locally, 40 Acres Gallery in 2008 in the “BLACK, A Celebration of African American Art in Sacramento Area Collections.”
“It is the artists of the world, the feelers and the thinkers, who will ultimately save us; who can articulate, educate, defy, insist, sing and shout the big dreams.” – Leonard Bernstein
I am compelled, in part, to collect art as a result of the many problems that I perceive in the world. Predominant injustices that I see are issues such as sexism, racism, classism, and numbness to historical atrocities. In this exhibit, I have chosen works from my collection that speak to those issues. Art can stimulate us to reconsider those issues and challenge past and current perceptions which can enable a broadening of our outlook.
I hope that the truth in these works can challenge the viewers and give them food for thought.
Thomas Dewitt
