Frank J. Stockton’s work explores myth and memory through an eclectic approach to painting and other media.

Although a native of southern California, his fine art practice began during his residence in New York City, while  he served as an illustrator for The New Yorker and other publications.

Stockton's paintings gained recognition through their inclusion in the noteworthy group exhibition "American Genre: Contemporary Painting" at the Maine Institute of Contemporary Art in 2017. Additionally, he has been featured twice in New American Paintings (Issues 129 & 133) and participated in the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture residency in 2015. Solo presentations of his work have been showcased at Samuel Freeman (2016 & 2018), Denk Gallery (2018), and Iris Project (2021) galleries in Los Angeles.

In 2019, Stockton launched "Nothing Special Los Angeles," an exhibition series based out of a spare storage room in his studio. The project produced five local exhibitions and a group show at Somos Art House in Berlin, Germany.

After relocating to Sacramento in 2022, Stockton became a member of the Axis Gallery collective, aspiring to contribute to the regional arts scene as both an artist and curator. He holds a BFA in Illustration from Art Center College of Design (2005) and an MFA in Painting from UCLA (2015).
