Axis Gallery is pleased to announce our 2014 Invitational Exhibition with artists Jan Blythe, Sandi Escobar, and Carol Ladewig during the month of December.  These three artists were juried into our 2014 National Juried Exhibition at Axis gallery and have been invited back to showcase more of their work.

Bay area artist, Jan Blythe grew up in Scotland and began her education in England before receiving her MFA at SFAI.  Her work speaks to issues of loss, melancholy, longing, and desire.   “My painting process involves layering several colors onto the surface then using techniques of scraping; sanding or dissolving, I intuitively make marks that uncover the underlying support or colors. I may then go back and reapply more medium to add layers and depth to the piece then start again. A constant constructing and deconstructing to form my art.”

Sandi Escobar grew up in Los Angeles and earned her MFA from Chico State University. Escobar has exhibited all over California and recently had a solo show at 1078 Gallery in Chico, CA. She also became an Assistant Professor at Sierra College in Rocklin, CA this fall. Sandi will be showing work from her “Sabór a Mí” series. “The fine line between the erotic and grotesque, pleasure and pain can just as quickly migrate from powerlessness, into a state of euphoria and empowerment.”

Carol Ladewig has exhibited widely in California as well as nationally. She received a BA from UC Berkeley and an MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts. Ladewig will be exhibiting a selection of work from her “Year in Color” series. …” I seek to render abstract concepts like time and its measurement into a visual vocabulary. . Since 2011, I have created a small painting for each day using a complex color that has been made by mixing a simple set of primary pigments and white. Every panel differs in tone and composition showcasing a color mixed uniquely for that day. This practice is an attempt to translate and capture the day’s unique experiences, activities, and moods.”
