Joanne Tepper Saffren: Trees
September 5–28, 2025
Reception: Saturday, September 13, 5–8 PM

Axis Gallery presents Trees, an exhibition by Joanne Tepper Saffren, an artist with deep roots in California. Drawing on a lifelong practice shaped in Los Angeles and now based in Folsom, Tepper Saffren uses cyanotype and anthrotype—historic, sun-powered photographic processes—to capture the enduring spirit of Folsom’s ancient oak trees in bold indigo cyanotypes and delicate, one-of-a-kind anthrotype works.

Cyanotypes, with their rich, lasting blues, suggest permanence. Anthrotypes, created slowly over days and weeks using plant pigments and sunlight, fade over time—evoking the ephemerality of the natural world. Together, these works reflect on aging, resilience, and the generous cycles of life.

A limited edition of cyanotypes will be available, along with selected works of art. Proceeds will benefit the Sacramento Tree Foundation in support of its mission to grow and protect the region’s urban forest.
