During the month of February, Axis Gallery presents abstract works by Cherie Hacker. Hacker paints in oils developing layers with additional media that possess a tactile look and feel, often including her unique use of collage. The organic shapes and compositions are inspired by those seen in nature as well as figurative impressions shown by way of lines that appear, disappear and reappear. The abstractions break down imagery into microscopic landscapes of the universal mind, each a conceptual archipelago. Hacker studied with artists Wayne Thiebaud and Roy DeForest as an undergraduate at UC Davis, but was influenced more by exposure to Abstract Expressionism while in grad school on the East Coast. Her paintings surprise the viewer with unexpected color exchanges as each one portrays a new discovery.
Biography:
Cherie Hacker began her artistic pursuits in Chicago, later received a Studio Art Bachelors from UC Davis followed by a MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has exhibited her work from east to west coast, from Alaska to New York and most recent in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her studio is at the E Street Studio complex, a warehouse with twelve artists and a gallery here in Sacramento.
