Kenna Doeringer

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”

- Oscar Wilde

There are works of art, styles, processes and artists we are drawn to.  We travel to museums, galleries and studios, to see these works, draw inspiration and dream of mastering their techniques.  Axis Gallery is excited to present Kenna Doeringer’s show, “Creativity: Pocket sized”.  She has spent the last few years traveling, revisiting and re-appreciating some of the artists that have inspired her.  Studying the work, their process, even the spaces they created in; these things and much more inspired this latest collection of work.  The simple and powerful lines that make up the messages in Keith Haring’s drawings, the attention Jackson Pollack paid in filling up his canvas with layers, adding depth with the veins and drips of paint, the feeling of obsession in covering the world in Yayoi Kusama’s polka dots, and the vastness of Nam June Paik’s world of creativity, daring to present video as an artform, Kenna attempted to capture some of the art and pay homage to their work and sanctuaries.

Growing up with the encouragement to pursue painting, led to attending the School of Visual Arts in New York City. With an exposure to a vast array of new experiences and a broader view of the arts, she majored in animation, but soon developed a strong interest in film and sound. After graduation, she found herself in a career as a feature film picture and sound editor on over 45 projects. She never lost her desire to create, and in the wake of an eight year absence, picked up a brush and began the task of reacquainting herself with paint.

As a former photo-realist, she found a sophistication that comes with experience. The concepts stem from simple ideas and each piece inspires and creates an architecture for the next. Kenna has been examining different genres and methods, combining her visual exploration in drawing and sculpting, her work in film and audio, into the world of miniature.  Learning about architecture, carpentry, furniture making, brick laying, sewing, clay sculpture, 3D Printing and how to create the perfect polka dot, she has extended her reach as a multi-media artist.

Today that exploration continues in her home, in Sacramento, California.
